An older house that has had a built-in fitted usually gave up something to make room for it. Ceilings are lower, the framing is what it is, and the cabinetmaker closed the gap to make it look intentional. That is fine in January and hard work in July, when the coil has nowhere to send its heat and the cabinet drifts a couple of degrees by mid-afternoon.

Before that becomes a refrigeration diagnosis we measure what the condenser is breathing. Often the fix is a modified grille or a genuinely clean coil rather than a part.

A softener, a whole-house filter or a treatment system ahead of the kitchen line changes what arrives at the fill valve, and every cartridge change puts air into the run. The classic sequence is: filter changed, ice production collapses, everybody blames the ice maker. Purging several litres through the line clears the air and the problem with it.

Where production stays poor after that, we measure fill volume per cycle at the valve, check the mould heater and watch the ejector through a full harvest before condemning the module.

• Supply temperature along the run, which changes cube quality on its own
• Bin thermostat and store temperature, which is what fuses cubes together

Finished lower floors here often hold a wine cabinet or a second refrigerator, and those live in a damper, warmer, less ventilated space than the kitchen. Condensation at the seal and zones that slowly converge are the two complaints, and both are read against the room rather than in isolation.
