Once it is booked
What happens, in order
-
On the phone
Model and serial off the plate if you can reach it, then a description of what the unit is doing and roughly when it started. Most faults narrow to two or three candidates in that conversation.
-
At the kitchen
Cabinet and freezer temperatures logged separately, condenser and evaporator inspected, and the defrost cycle observed rather than assumed. Panelled units come out on their rails only when they have to.
-
Before anything is opened
You get the fault, the part, the labour and the total, in that order. Nothing is ordered and nothing is dismantled until you have agreed to it.
-
After the repair
The unit is left running with the cabinet back at temperature and the panels aligned as they were found. If the same fault returns, the callback is not a second service call.

The valve buzzed away but nothing filled. He checked pressure at the shutoff, which was partly closed, then replaced the valve anyway because the solenoid was dragging. No trouble with it since.

Condensation formed inside the glass door every single evening and the labels were starting to lift. The heater circuit built into the door had gone open. He tested it in front of me with a meter, repaired the door wiring, and the glass has stayed clear since.

Paired columns in a newer house off Boston Post Road. The freezer side kept icing shut between openings. Drain heater had failed and the trough was solid. He thawed it carefully instead of chipping at it.
